While the main energy producers, thermo power plants, registered decreases in the electricity production, renewable energy producers are on an increasing path, both hydro-powers and wind turbines having registered better numbers on 2012 as per the data showed by the National Institute of Statistics (INS). From the total amount of domestic consumption between January 1 and August 31, 2013, more than 41.6% is due to renewable energy.
The most accelerated growth is registered by wind parks that almost doubled the amount of energy produced within the said period. Wind energy has provided 7.7% (2.9 TWh) of the total electricity production, whereas in the first eight month of 2012 it meant only 3.9% (1.6 TWh) of the total. Renewable energy becomes, therefore, a more important electricity source among traditional electricity producers moreover since Romania has undertaken an engagement towards EU Commission so that 38 % of the gross domestic energy consumption will result from renewable energy by 2020.
