Romania's industrial production decreased by 6% in the first quarter

Data provided by the National Institute of Statistics showed a steep decrease in production in the romanian industrial sector by 3.4% (gross series) and 12.4% respectively (series adjusted according to the number of working days and seasonality). If we compare the decrease in March 2020 with the one in March 2019, the decrease is 12.7% (gross series) and 14.5% (series adjusted according to the number of working days and seasonality). All in all, for the entire first quarter, the contraction in production was about 6% compared to the first 3 months of last year.


The manufacturing industry decreased by 4.5%, while the extractive industry increased by 5.4%. Production and supply of electricity and heat, gas, hot water and air conditioning remained at the same level.

Industrial production, the series adjusted for the number of working days and seasonality, was lower than the previous month by 12.4%, as a result of the decreases registered by the manufacturing industry (-14.9%) and the extractive industry (- 6.7%). Production and supply of electricity and heat, gas, hot water and air conditioning increased by 1.4%.

In the period 1.I - 31.III.2020, compared to the period 1.I - 31.III.2019, the industrial production (gross series) decreased by 5.9%, as a result of the decreases registered by the manufacturing industry (-6 , 3%), production and supply of electricity and heat, gas, hot water and air conditioning (-4.8%) and extractive industry (-3.8%). Industrial production, series adjusted according to the number of working days and seasonality, in the period 1.I - 31.III.2020, compared to the period 1.I - 31.III.2019, was lower by 6.4% , as a result of decreases in the manufacturing industry (-7.5%), the production and supply of electricity and heat, gas, hot water and air conditioning (-5.8%) and the extractive industry (-2.7%).
