Chinese corporation ZTE has won a wireless project contract from Cosmote for transforming the existing 2G/3G network and build a new Long-Term Evolution network (4G LTE) in southern Romania, the company announces.
Based on the said contract, ZTE anticipates that the project will require construction of over 3,000 base stations in the region. This will be the second cooperation between the two companies, as four years ago ZTE also completed an Universal Mobile Telecommunications System project for Cosmote Romania.
ZTE has recently won 146 commercial LTE/EPC contracts worldwide, covering 70 percent of the countries that have invested in 4G wireless networks. The company, a global provider of telecommunication equipment, network solutions and mobile devices has already launched LTE networks for operators such China Mobile, China Telecom, Softbank, KPN or Vodafone.
Cosmote Romania, one of the major players in the telecommunication industry in the country, won in 2012 the auction for the 25M 1800M and 10M 2600M LTE spectrums and planned to launch LTE services for enhancing customer experience and increasing competitiveness. The company is controlled by Deutsche Telekom which became the major shareholder of OTE Group, the Greece-based telecommunication group incorporating Cosmote. This fall, Cosmote will start a re-branding process, in line with the German group’s global strategy, hence it will operate under Telekom Romania brand.
