The public lighting system in Suceava will be modernized as part of a 6 million euro project under the Swiss-Romanian Cooperation Programme aimed at reducing the economic and social disparities within the enlarged European Union.
The project implementation period is 18 months, most of the funds, about 5 million euro, representing Swiss grants, according to a media release of the Ministry of Finance, which coordinates the programme domestically.
The project includes the replacing of over 3,800 old luminaries with LED equipment which will be controlled through an integrated telemanagement system.
Apart from improving the city’s appearance and the safety of road and pedestrian traffic, the modernization of the street lighting will reduce the energy use by over 60 percent, as well as the air pollution by more than 1,400 tons of CO2 yearly, while the municipality will save over 1 million lei (about 227,000 euro) in terms of annual maintenance expenses.
The related agreements for the “Modern and efficient public lighting in Suceava” project were signed on April 2, 2015 by the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs in Switzerland, through the Swiss Embassy, together with the Ministry of Finance, as the National Coordination Unit, the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Administration, as Intermediary Organism, and by the Suceava Municipality, as beneficiary.
