Klaus Iohannis, the president of Romania, is
currently on an official visit to Washington DC.
He will meet with US vice-president Joe
Biden and take part in the traditional White House reception hosted by US
president Barack Obama.
The Romanian chief of state also took part in the
UN Summit on Sunday.
During his speech he addressed issues regarding
the migration crisis, stating that without valid solutions for ending the
situation, the wave of people running from conflicts will only increase and that
“this situation can be solved, inside the European Union, only by open dialogue
and agreement” Agerpres reports.
His discourse also included the topic of Romania's
national strategy for sustainable development and the need for its revising.
Among the subjects he discussed were poverty, social exclusion and securing
international peace and security.
According to Agerpres, Iohannis stated that
poverty“ could lead to desperation and frustration , which might become the seed
of extremism and violence. At the same time, peace and security – be they at an
international level or a national one- are major premises for sustainable
development.”
During his visit to DC , president Iohannis also
met with Romanian expats to whom he spoke of the role they have in strengthening
Romanian-American relations and the respect he bears them for having been so
courageous as to make a whole new life for themselves so far away from home.
