The subsidiary of Daimler, Star Assembly factory in Sebes officially launched the production of the high-tech transmission gearboxes 9G-Tronic . Star Transmission was founded in 2001 as a joint-venture between Daimler and the Romanian mechanical enterprise in Cugir. Initially the facility was set up as a manufacturing line for cog wheels and transmission parts for Mercedes gearboxes. Star Transmission is a fully owned Daimler subsidiary since 2013, when the Star Assembly division and factory in Sebes was established.
The investment in the assembly line in Sebes, amounts to more than 300 million euros from Mercedes and a state aid financing from the Romanian government in amount of 37.4 million euro.
The total number of employees in the factory is estimated to reach 2,300 workers by the end of 2016. Currently, Mercedes’ Star Transmission in Cugir and Star Assembly subsidiaries in Sebes have 1,800 employees. The production for 2016 at Star Assembly plant is estimated at 500.000 units, a significant increase from the 300,000 gearbox units that rolled out in 2015.
The launching event was attended by Markus Schaefer, Chief of Supply Chain and Production for Mercedes-Benz cars division, Frank Deiss, director of propulsion systems at Mercedes-Benz cars and Romanian Vice Prime Minister, Costin Borc.
