Monsanto invests over 23 million euro in GM seeds station in Romania

Monsanto expands its production and processing corn capacity in Romania after completing a EUR23.7 million investment in the Sinesti seeding processing station, in Ialomita County. The Sinesti station is an important contributory factor to the local economy mostly due to exports, states a company release.

‘We have been continuously investing in the Romanian agriculture. After 15 years of multiplying seeds, we add another important pillar to our investment. By expanding the production capacity, which amounts USD32 million (about EUR23.7 million), we will be able to bag another 1.6 million corn units (one units means a bag of 50.000 corn kernels)’, Ioan Moraru, Director of Production and Processing at Monsanto Romania says. 

The American company which is the world’s largest producer of GM (genetically modified) seeds runs an extensive development project that includes its locations in Europe. In this respect, besides the launch of the extended production facility in Romania, Monsanto inaugurated three others in the region.

Through this investment worth EUR500 million, planned over the next ten years, Monsanto increases the processing capacities of its stations in Romania, Hungary and Turkey. The project includes further investments in France, Ukraine and Russia aiming to eventually double the seed production capacity.

Monsanto is present in 70 locations across Europe, having around 4000 employees, of which 1000, temporary.
