Romania, present at the 11th edition of ASEM

Romania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Titus Corlatean, attends the 11th edition of Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM), a ministerial reunion that takes place in New Delhi, India, between November 11 – 12, a press release from the ministry informs.

This year’s edition focuses on the topic: ASEM – Bridge of the partnership for growth and development. Thus, the discussions will approach several subjects related to the economic opportunities and challenges in Europe and Asia, as well as the unconventional challenges concerning the security such as combating terrorism, cyber security or food, energy and water resources security.

Keeping the spirit of the informal dialogue specific among the 51 European and Asian partners, the ministers of foreign affairs will also discuss other regional and global issues  like the ASEM’s expansion by including new members, Croatia in particular, which became EU member this July.

Being launched in 1996 in Bangkok, ASEM is in fact an informal dialogue meeting attended by EU state-members (except from Croatia), Norway, Switzerland, EU Commission, ASEAN’s (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) together with 20 Asian states – 10 ASEAN members (Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Philippines, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam) and China, South Korea, Japan, India, Mongolia, Pakistan, Russia, Bangladesh, Australia, New Zealand.

Romania has attended ASEM since January 1, 2007 and the official adhering was recorded during the ASEM7 Summit held in Beijing in 2008.
