The total value of the Romanian postal services market was 3.04 billion lei in 2019, 3% less than in 2018. Thus, one inhabitant generated during 2019, on average, revenues for postal service providers worth 157 lei. Depending on the revenues from postal services obtained in 2019, the main competitors on the Romanian postal services market are Fan Courier, with a market share of 23%, Compania Națională Poșta Română (22%) and Urgent Cargus with 12% of the total income.
„The report of statistical data on postal services in 2019 made by ANCOM reflects a slight downward trend of the market, by 3%, on all traffic, but also on total revenues amounting to 3 billion lei. The decreases were significantly mitigated by the increase in parcel traffic by 27% for the second consecutive year, as a result of the intensification of electronic commerce, both domestically and internationally. The parcels brought three quarters of the postal services revenues in 2019 ", said Eduard Lovin, ANCOM vice-president.
Of the total of 561 million postal items (down 3% compared to 2018), most are mail items (65%), while parcels accounted for 26% of total traffic, the rest being represented by other categories of postal items. The average number of postal items per capita was 29, of which 19 were correspondence items and 8 were parcels.
Parcel traffic increased by 27% to 146 million and generated revenues of over 2.2 billion lei, meaning an average income of over 15 lei / parcel (13 lei for an internal parcel, sent to Romania, comparatively with 105 lei for an international package, sent from Romania to other countries).
Domestic parcels were delivered on average 1.4 days after entering the postal networks, 78% of which were delivered the next day, only 1% being sent in 5 days or more. As expected, 9 out of 10 packages were delivered to the addresses specified by customers (home, service), less than 1% being delivered through automated systems.
Although they hold a share of 65% of the total postal traffic in Romania, correspondence and printed items generated only 22% of market revenues, the average income obtained for such a item being 1.8 lei.
Delivered internally, such a shipment generated an average of 1.5 lei and reached the recipient on average in 2.9 days, double compared to a package.
Universal service mail traffic reached 193 million mail items in 2019 (up 7% from the previous year). Of the total referrals included in the universal service, 84% were domestic referrals (163 million referrals, up 13% from the previous year), and the remaining 16% were international referrals (30 million referrals).
In 2019, the universal service distributed 27.7 million coupons for the payment of social protection rights and information documents prepared by the National House of Public Pensions.
Universal service thus contributed 34% to postal traffic and 19% to revenue.
The total number of complaints received by postal service providers increased by 12% in 2019 (627 thousand complaints), but the share of those considered to be well-founded (105 thousand) remained at 17% of the total. For 48 thousand, compensations were granted, in a total value of 14.3 million lei, meaning an average value of a compensation of 269 lei, increasing by 6%.
