The Romania's cereal production has doubled since 2007 confirming the great potential of local agriculture. And this potential, along with cheaper land prices compared with the rest of EU are attractive for international investors who have great financial power.
'I have been contacted by many embassies up to this point - from Israel, Middle-East, Nordic countries that asked me to facilitate acquisitions of local farmland.' says Laurentiu Baciu, the president of the Romanian Producers Associations League ( LAPAR) according to Ziarul Financiar.
On the other hand, the Romania Ministry of Agriculture supports local players in the agro-industry through a draft law that is meant to restrict to 100 the number of hectares that can be bought by non-resident foreign citizen starting 2014. This would also apply for Romanian citizens provided the draft will be voted by the Parliament.
